About the Event

“Imaginary cartography begins where scientific cartography ends. It begins with the expectation of fantasy, play, and dream. With imaginary cartography, this personal mapping, it is not strange to reach new lands, islands and continents.” — Yiannis Christakos

Join us for a workshop designed by Saskia Jordá, curator of the Contours of a Story exhibition at Civic Center Public Gallery inside Scottsdale Civic Center Library, where participants imagine and build a fictional place/island by tracing, cutting, and layering paper, maps, foam, and recycled materials, creating “an island of one’s own.” Using our hands and bodies as points of departure, we open the conversation of the body as landscape. These fictional cartographies allow us to work intuitively, responding to each layer with our artistic eye while conceptually addressing a sense of place, refuge, and our connections to the land we inhabit.
