About the Event

Workshop Dates: Nov. 18, Dec. 2, Dec. 16, and Jan. 6; 1–2:30 p.m.

Participants in the late fall Memory Lounge series will meet improv artists Amy Carpenter and Elizabeth Hutchman and visual artists Ann Morton, Koryn Woodward Wasson, and Roy Wasson Valle.

Memory Lounge is an arts program for people with mild to moderate memory loss and their care partners. Did you know that engagement in the arts can improve your quality of life by:

  • Improving mood and outlook
  • Lessening the effects of depression and/or anxiety
  • Offering a comfortable social outing
  • Giving you wonderful moments together
  • Putting something FUN in your calendar!

Each series will introduce you to four professional artists who will lead workshops in visual arts, music, dance, or theatre. Additionally, you will see the current exhibitions at SMoCA and engage in discussions about the artworks, ideas, and artists. This is a wonderful self-care opportunity that promises to create new joyful memories!

The pricing is per couple for the four-workshop series. Sorry, but individual workshop sales are not possible.

Respond to the Violet Protest Project—and the Elections—with Ann Morton
Nov. 18, 1 – 2:30 p.m.

This workshop activity will be in response to a visual presentation about the Violet Protest, which was a nationwide public art project—orchestrated by Phoenix artist Ann Morton—that employed hand-made textiles as tools for protesting against political divisiveness and called for national unity.

Explore Improv with Amy Carpenter and Elizabeth Denneau
Dec. 2, 1 – 2:30 p.m.

In this workshop, we will explore improv with Amy and Elizabeth. Find out how much fun it is to create skits, using prompts, props, and the “YES, AND” style of communication! Improv teaches us a very useful tool that helps us joyfully communicate with our loved ones.

Artist Gallery Discussion and Collage Workshop with Roy Wasson Valle
Dec. 16, 1 – 2:30 p.m.

Frotage collage is fun to say, but even more fun to create! Explore myriad textures, capture them all with rubbings, and create a collage full of memories. Meet inside Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA).

Imaginative Painting with Koryn Woodward Wasson
Jan. 6, 1 – 2:30 p.m.

Our brains are programmed to see faces and sometimes objects in ambiguous forms, such as clouds or ink splotches. In this workshop, we will use this principle to find the hidden surprises within our own paintings and bring them out for all to see.
