Hope Chest Online for Educators

Welcome to Hope Chest!

Hope Chest online is an abridged approach to A Boy’s Story, A Man’s Memory: Remembering the Holocaust 1933–1945 that focus on select chapters for a condensed timeline. To prepare for lessons, click on the “Introduction” link below and review the Content Overview, which provides insight on what to expect, how to create a safe space, building a classroom community, arts activities, and assessment.

Prior to beginning, please ask students to complete the Hope Chest pre-evaluation, located on the Hope Chest shared Google Drive. The program will conclude with a student post-evaluation and teacher observation journal. Oskar Knoblauch’s book and accompanying lessons have been divided into themed sections. In this online experience, A Boy’s Story, A Man’s Memory: Remembering the Holocaust 1933–1945 is abridged to focus on key chapters.

Familiarize yourself with the lessons and chapters of each section. Lessons may be altered to support specific learning needs—concentrated on specific themes and topics—or abridged as you see fit. Reviewing the content in advance will allow you to prepare for each lesson and customize to suit your classroom’s needs and curriculum goals. Lessons may suggest additional supplies for activities or anticipatory set. Audio and image files are linked within each section below. Some chapters contain content that may be disturbing to some students. Page numbers that include material sensitive in nature are indicated at the beginning of each section. Discuss the content with students in advance and/or allow students to skip over select text.

Hope Chest provides opportunities for formative and summative assessment. Students will demonstrate understanding through discussion, written responses, and arts activities. Lesson plan includes instructions for a mid-unit and final Socratic seminar. Options for the final reflection include Socratic seminar, three-to five-paragraph essay, and/or written journal response to Section 10. Assessment as with lessons may be customized to suit your classroom’s needs. Also, please also ask students to complete the post-evaluation. Teachers, please complete the teacher observation journal. Both are available via the Hope Chest shared Google Drive.

Upon Hope Chest’s completion, students’ achievements should be celebrated. Upstander Certificates can be personalized with each student’s name and are saved within the “Final Assessment and Conclusion” link below. The certificate represents their commitment to be an upstander by respecting themselves and others, showing tolerance, and doing what is right in the face of adversity.
