About the Event

James Turrell is an internationally renowned, Arizona-based conceptual artist who works in the fields of light and optics. He is known for his Skyspaces—enclosures with an aperture through which we can view the sky in a profoundly different way. In this illuminating event and workshop, you will experience the sunset inside James Turrell Skyspace Knight Rise at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA). Scottsdale Arts staff will enlighten you about this important artist as you capture the sunset’s glow with watercolors.  

Following the experience in the Skyspace, enjoy the current exhibitions at SMoCA and engage in gallery discussions with staff. 

You will leave with your own original masterpiece artwork and a greater knowledge about Turrell’s work and other contemporary art. 

This experience is recommended for teens through adults, with no artmaking experience necessary.

 COVID-19 Health and Safety Protocols for SMoCA Events 

We are returning to in-person events with safety in mind, so please review the new COVID-19 health and safety protocols for SMoCA events. This event will require proof of  a valid negative COVID-19  Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test within 72 hours of the event. In lieu of a negative COVID-19 test, proof of  valid full COVID-19 vaccination  will be accepted.
